David Stearns, visibly aware of the tension, took charge of addressing the crowd. Acknowledging the passionate chants from the crowds he attempted to bring back the conversation to the bigger picture. “We all love Pete. And we’ve said that many times. I think as we’ve gone through this process, we’ve continued to express that,” Stearns said. However, he wasn’t shy in reminding the crowd that, like every other sport, even in baseball feelings and business decisions don’t go hand in hand. “We also understand that this is a business and Pete as a free agent deserves the right and has the right, earned the privilege really, to see what’s out there,” said Stearns despite receiving boos from the crowd. He also emphasized on the fact that Pete has earned the opportunity to explore the market and look out for options.

As the event wrapped up, the growing tension between fans’ unwavering support for Pete Alonso and the Mets’ business-related aspirations was hard to ignore. Although Alonso’s future with the New York Mets remains uncertain, the connection and love from the fans is undeniable. The question remains, will the Mets find a way to keep their beloved star in Citi Field or will the business aspirations prevail?

Mets and Pete at a crossroads: stay or go?

The situation regarding Pete Alonso’s future has reached a boiling point now, where both parties are at a standstill. Despite getting offers from the New York Mets, Pete doesn’t favor the figures. As owner Steve Cohen said, “We’ve made a significant offer to Pete. And what David said is correct, he’s entitled to go out and explore his market, and that’s what he’s doing.” He even expressed his frustration and exhaustion over the structure of the deal.

However, for Alonso, the terms aren’t what he was expecting. The Mets reportedly offered a three-year deal worth between $68-$70 million, which Alonso declined. Pete’s agent Scott Boras stated that the contract that Pete is seeking is similar to what other clubs offer to players of comparable status. However, the Mets have already accepted the reality and started to prepare their roster-building plans without Alonso in it, preparing young players like Mark Vientos and Brett Baty for the potential vacancy at first base. Although they still haven’t closed the doors for a possible deal.

As this saga unfolds, its clear that both sides are firm at their positions, thus bringing the situation to a standstill. The future of one of the Mets’ most beloved stars remains uncertain, and the next few weeks could prove pivotal in deciding whether Alonso stays in New York or begins a new chapter elsewhere.
