It has not been even a week since the World Series got over and the New York Mets have already started doing their business. The last season, the Mets spent a big chunk on their roster. And it seems like they are not done yet. Notably, the Mets have re-signed their star reliever Edwin Diaz on a new contract.

Ever since billionaire businessman Steve Cohen has taken over the Mets’ ownership, the NL East side has done some serious business in the MLB market. Although the Mets did not win any title in the 2022 season, they were quite impressive throughout the season.

And now, when they have extended their star reliever Edwin Diaz’s contract for a whopping amount, the MLB world is going gaga over it.

New York Mets and Edwin Diaz agree to a five-year, $102 million contract

It is a pity that the Mets did not win anything big in 2022 after having such a strong rotation. When talking about Edwin Diaz, the Mets closer had a remarkable season from the plate. He recorded 118 strikeouts with just a 1.31 ERA.

And guess what? His remarkable season has earned him a long-term contract with the Mets. Per renowned MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Mets signed Diaz for a whopping $102 million on a 5-year contract.

Notably, Diaz is the first-ever reliever to get a $100 million contract in MLB’s history. However, once this news came out, MLB fans started dissing the Mets for spending this much amount on a closer.

Several fans called it a waste of money, while a few baseball fans targeted the Mets owner for spending too much money on a reliever.

Had it not been for the last few games, the New York Mets would have done something bigger this season. With pitchers like Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, and Chris Bassitt on the mound, the Mets had one of the best closers in the game, Edwin Diaz, by their side.

However, it was not enough to win a title for the Buck Showalter-led team. When talking about the next season, the Mets might need a couple of hitters on their rosters. Although they have a serial hitter in Pete Alonso from the plate, he can not do much alone.
