The New York Mets are open for business. With the highest payroll baseball has ever seen, the team has gone in the opposite direction with their performance. Consistently ranking at the bottom of league standings, the Mets are shaking things up. A few days ago, they traded reliever David Robertson to the Miami Marlins. Although the exchange saw them getting two minor leaguers in return, ace Max Scherzer is not happy.
The pitcher recently turned 39 and is having one of the worst seasons of his career. Although he has shown signs of his spectacular capabilities throughout the season, his ERA still ranks at 4.01 in 19 starts. Scherzer’s $130 million contract might still see him with the Mets until next year. That is, if he doesn’t choose the opt-out option after the 2023 season.

The Mets traded David Robertson in return for infielder Marco Vargas and catcher Ronald Hernandez of the Marlins. The aging team full of veterans could use the help in the future but that doesn’t mean everyone was a fan of the move. Scherzer, specifically, didn’t approve and it has further prompted him to speak to the front office in the future.
Max Scherzer when asked if there's time for a run to still be made:
"Probably got to have a conversation with the front office. You traded our closer away. A bunch of people are going to have to have conversations with the front office" pic.twitter.com/KD2uPKhhEl

“Probably got to have a conversation with the front office. You traded our closer away. A bunch of people are going to have to have conversations with the front office,” he told SNY Mets.
MLB.com expanded on his comments later, “I’ve got to have a conversation with the front office … about everything,” Scherzer said. “That’s the most I’m going to say. You have to talk to the brass. You have to understand what they see, what they’re going to do. That’s the best I can tell you.”
The comments came after Scherzer gave a particularly good performance against the Washington Nationals. It was a much-needed play after the disappointing games that were played against the Boston Red Sox. The pitcher realizes that his team is not playing up to its potential and some of the blame for recent losses lies on him.

Scherzer Admits Frustration At the Series of Losses
It’s worth speculating whether Scherzer will exercise the opt-out option because, given his age and the recent season, it would seem like a logical choice. Yet, he has refused to comment on it as of now and admits he wants to stay for another year.
The pitcher also realizes that the roster could do with some of his help, “We put ourselves in this position. We haven’t played well as a team. I’ve had a hand in that for why we’re in the position that we’re at. Can’t get mad at anybody but yourself but, it stinks.”
