The 2023 MLB season is fast approaching and the Houston Astros are among the favorites to win it all. 2022 was a massive year for the Astros as they powered their way to the World Series title. Many sources are projecting the Astros to be frontrunners again, having kept the key pieces in their roster. 

Their players are committed to doing whatever it takes to win another World Series. The latest reports state that one Astros star even gained weight during the off-season, to improve their play. They did so in order to improve both their batting and fielding.

Houston Astros’ Mauricio Dubon gained weight this off-season to improve his play

The Houston Astros are going into the 2023 season as one of the favorites to win the World Series. But despite their status as favorites, their players are giving their all to improve and plate even better. Since joining the Astros, Mauricio Dubon has reportedly gained 25 pounds. The Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome reported on the weight gain via Twitter. 

In a Tweet, he said, “Mauricio Dubón when the Astros acquired him: 165 lbs. Mauricio Dubón reporting to spring training this week: 190 lbs.” Rome also shared a comment from Dubon on the process, “I was eating at least 5,000 calories and forcing myself to eat. There was times I didn’t want to see food, smell anything.”

Last year, he was utilized in a number of different positions by the Astros, both in the infield and the outfield.

Fans have reacted to the Tweet and shown support for the transformation. Some predicted that he would have a breakout year. Others lauded his commitment to improvement.

One Astros star was even dancing as he returned home after winning the 2022 World Series. But getting back to Dubon, in 2022, he was solid as a fielder but had a down year in terms of hitting. This weight gain is seen as a way for him to improve his offensive game and increase his power. It will be interesting to see how the change impacts his game. 

Mauricio Dubon is a versatile fielding option for the Astros

Mauricio Dubon is one of the more versatile fielders that the Houston Astros possess. He started the season with the San Francisco Giants before being traded to the Astros. Over the course of the season, he played the majority of his games at shortstop, centerfield, and second base.

But he also played at left field, right field, and third base, although for very few games. Many fans and followers are wondering how this weight gain will impact his performance.
