Sandy Alcántara’s return to the mound has to be a time for celebration. But, instead, the ace is at the center of a storm of uncertainty. The debate is not related to his talent—everyone knows he is an elite star. The real issue is whether the Miami Marlins are restricting their Cy Young-winning pitcher’s workload or not. The school dropout logged a league-leading 228.2 innings in 2022. For him, the thought of an innings cap looks almost contradictory. Yet, that is exactly what early reports suggested.
At first, insiders claimed the team was planning to limit Sandy Alcántara’s innings as he returned from Tommy John surgery. Given his reputation as a workhorse, this quickly sparked debate. But then manager Skip Schumaker shut down those reports entirely. “There is no limit“, he said to CBS Sports. Schumaker’s statement contradicted past reports and raised more eyebrows. If there is no limit, why were sources claiming otherwise? Could the Marlins be leaving the door open for a midseason trade? Or is this just another instance of mixed messaging?
Adding to the situation, AJ Ramos was all-in on the 2-times All-Star’s return. “Man, he is refreshing. I am really happy that he is back“, the former MLB pitcher said on MLB Network Radio. He praised Sandy Alcántara’s leadership, highlighting that he traveled with the team last season despite being injured—something most talented pitchers would not do.

“That is the type of guy you want to give money to, man“, AJ Ramos said. “He deserves every bit of that money because even at the last year of his contract, he is still going to be finding ways to work hard“.

Trade speculation heats up as multiple teams eye Sandy Alcántara.
Alcántara’s return from injury has definitely energized the Marlins. However, it has also put him on the radar of multiple teams. The Yankees have been desperately linked to him. For instance, MLB insider Joel Sherman said, “They went into spring training with the best rotation… but they do not have depth anymore. The only two guys who could be traded are Dylan Cease and Sandy Alcántara. And I do not know that the Yankees have what it takes to get them”. The team’s rotation has faced setbacks and with Gerrit Cole sidelined, the Yankees need for a reliable talent is more pressing. Alcántara could help to regain their momentum. However, the issue lies in whether New York has the resources Miami would need.

In addition, the Mets are also in the mix, analyzing a blockbuster deal to land the philanthropist star. The Mets’ rotation has been hit hard by injuries. In this period adding a pitcher of his caliber would be a game-transformer. However, an intra-division trade between the Mets and Marlins presents a hurdle. Because Marlins could be hesitant to enhance a division competitor. Despite the trade talk, Alcántara remains unfazed, saying, “Oh no, that is not going to affect myself. I know the way that I perform. I know the way that I compete… I feel happy to be here“. As the season comes, the aim will be on whether Miami keeps their ace and cash in on a lucrative deal.
