Can Blake Snell finally secure the big deal he missed last year, or is history repeating?

Scott Boras doesn’t want history to be repeated, neither does Blake Snell. Snell could not achieve a big deal back in 2023 and the reasons were part him, part Boras. The number one cause: Blake hasn’t been very consistent, and the number two may have been his agent, Scott Boras. Boras is as famous as any other player in the baseball world.; his representation has quite a reputation.

Boras has been known to get extravagant deals for his players including the famous $700 million Shohei Ohtani deal with the Dodgers, and some say that it also led to Snell not receiving an offer he wanted. Blake Snell did sign a contract much later in March with the San Francisco Giants, inking a two-year, $62 million deal. His first three starts were a disaster: but by summer, Snell was on fire.

Blake Snell looked like a Cy Young candidate. This year, he had the chance to opt out of his $30 million player option for 2025, and he didn’t hesitate – even his agent agreed. Scott Boras said, “The Snelling salts have created a lot of whiffs. The market has definitely awakened to Blake Snell.” But now, as Snell heads into free agency once again, the question remains: Why should this offseason be any different than last year?

Blake Snell will turn 32 in 2025, which doesn’t exactly scream “prime years” for a pitcher, even if Snell’s stuff is as electric as ever. So, what’s different this time around? First, the market has changed. Teams who might have been shy last year to put big money or term into a pitcher with Snell’s injury history may now see him as a high-reward investment, particularly because of the shorter-term deals that are in trend.

While Snell’s contract won’t approach the huge figures we’re seeing for Shohei Ohtani or Juan Soto, with teams like the Dodgers, Braves, and others constantly looking to add elite arms to their rotations, his strong second half should position him for a nice deal this winter.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Blake Snell finally secure the big deal he missed last year, or is history repeating?

Have an interesting take?

One option that Blake Snell has is going back to the Giants. Their new president of baseball operations Buster Posey did call Snell “one of the premier starting pitchers in the big leagues,”. That shows respect, but what he added next made us sure. Posey noted how re-signing Blake would be a priority – his strong performance at Oracle Park makes him a key piece for San Francisco’s rotation. But there’s a reason he opted out right? So, would Snell go back?

The number two option would be the Yankees. Sure they lost, but the team did reach the finals beating every other squad (other than the Dodgers of course). The Yankees are still one of the best teams out there. Gerrit Cole’s return to the Bronx may have taken the Yankees’ attention. New York had shown interest in Snell a year ago too, but this time, they are also in heavy pursuit of Juan Soto. That deal could top $500 million, so, the Yankees’ best shot at landing Snell would likely come if Soto signs elsewhere.

The third option would be the Mets. Of course, they are also considering signing Juan Soto, which would significantly impact their payroll. However, with starting pitchers Sean Manaea and Luis Severino both receiving qualifying offers, New York could be facing a rotation gap if they depart in free agency. If that happens, building the starting staff would become a priority, and Blake Snell could be a target to help the Mets’ rotation.
