Derek Jeter has had a number of legendary teammates over the years. But one of his most iconic comrades was none other than closing pitcher Mariano Rivera. Over the course of a 19-year career with the Yankees, Rivera won 5 World Series titles alongside Jeter. 

Furthermore, he established himself as one of the greatest closers the MLB has ever seen. The legendary Yankee pitcher excelled both during the regular season and the postseason as well. Rivera is going to receive a massive honor that will immortalize his name. 

Mariano Rivera Stadium is being built in Panama

For those unversed, Mariano Rivera was born in Panama and grew up in a small fishing village called Puerto Caimito. He started out as an amateur player. But was signed by the Yankees organization in 1990. The rest is history. But now, 10 years after his retirement, Rivera’s home nation is honoring him in a big way. They are building the Mariano Rivera stadium in West Panama. Talkin’ Yanks reported that the construction of the stadium recently got underway. 

In a Tweet, Talkin’ Yanks said, “Construction has begun on Mariano Rivera Stadium in West Panama 👏”. This is a huge honor for the Yankee legend. Furthermore, it will create an environment for more Panaman baseball stars to be nurtured.

Rivera retired in 2013 following a historic MLB career with the Yankees. When he did hang up the cleats, many considered him a lock for the Baseball Hall of Fame. But when he did eventually get selected, he did it in a truly historic fashion. 

Rivera was the first unanimous Hall Of Famer beating even Derek Jeter

In 2019, Mariano Rivera was inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. Furthermore, he made history while doing so. According to Bleacher Report, Rivera “became the first unanimous Hall of Fame electee in history”. This is a massive achievement that will be extremely hard for anyone to match.

Even Rivera’s teammate Jeter fell short of it when being inducted into the Hall of Fame, although by just one vote. There are few pitchers who came up clutch as much as Rivera did during his historic career. The stadium being built in honor of him is an indication of his greatness.
