Derek Jeter found the limelight and attention of Hollywood almost instantly after his MLB career began. Within two years of making his big league debut, the future New York Yankees captain started dating singer and songwriter Mariah Carey, who was already popular as the Queen of Christmas.

Now, as Christmas of 2022 approaches, a 25-year throwback about Captain Clutch’s impact on the Christmas icon comes back to light, through Carey’s memoir that she released two years back. In her autobiography, Carey speaks about freedom, and how every conversation with the Yankees legend metaphorically represented the notion of freedom.

In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the “Roof” singer, comprehensively elaborates on the evidently exciting and exhilarating dynamic between the pair. She speaks about every moment being symbolic of something greater, and she explained this through a vivid example of a jail cell.

Mariah Carey writes, “While the energy was definitely exciting and romantic, our actual conversations were on the light and banal side. I didn’t care; it was something. Planning and communicating with Derek felt like someone had smuggled a file into my jail cell. Each time we connected, it was as if I had worn down a bit more of the bars that held me captive.”

She continued to symbolize the jail cell as metaphorical freedom. Carey said, “Every little move we made built toward a bigger idea: freedom.”

Mariah Carey wrote two songs for the Yankees’ captain:

Derek Jeter, who’s now happily married to Hannah Davis, with three daughters, was once popular as the New York Yankees bad boy. Along with his various performances as one of the greatest defensive shortstops, Jeter’s romantic escapades found a way to plummet him into the limelight. And through the above instance, the influence he had on Carey’s life becomes palpable. However, it wasn’t limited to that.

Carey wrote two songs inspired by her relationship with Derek Jeter. ‘The Roof‘ was about Carey and Jeter’s first kiss, while ‘My All’ is about the time Carey put her life in danger to meet up with Jeter in another country.
