Manuel Rafael Mota Geronimo, commonly known as Manny Mota, served both as a player and a coach for the Dodgers. Playing for teams from the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates to the Montreal Expos to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 1998 Hall of Famer served as a coach for the Dodgers for 33 years. The man, who, in 1970, hit the first batted ball in major league history to cause a fatality, finds himself on the brink of grief.
Margarita Mota, the matriarch of a renowned baseball family and the beloved wife of Los Angeles Dodgers legend Manny Mota, passed away on Saturday at the age of 81. The Dodgers’ official X handle grieved the loss of a woman who took care of “American Families”.
Margarita Mota was the proud and humble life partner of Manny Mota. She broke the 60-year bond with her partner and slept forever, leaving him in great grievance. Though most people knew her as the wife of Manny Mota or the mother of former major leaguer Jose Mota, she claimed her own identity.

Indeed, her husband and sons were among the biggest baseball personalities, she, along with her husband, founded the Manny Mota International Foundation, a non-profit institute that solely focuses on raising money to help needy people. Through this institute, she and her MLB icon husband helped the Dominican Republic to grow forward. They used to raise money to build medical clinics, baseball fields, and schools in the Dominican Republic.
Apart from that, she was renowned among contemporary Dodgers players for her kind gestures. She used to cook for them during the Dominican Winter League. As Jose expressed, “She made sure the American families went to our house for the holidays. I applaud her,” Jose Mota said. “A woman of the people. She loved the needy and taught us to take care of them.” He added, “A strong woman. A wonderful woman.”
This heartbreaking news came within a few days as the Dodgers’, after some great struggle, finally clinched the 2023 Playoffs. Not only that, they are even leading the NL West with 96 wins this season. Fans are, on the one hand, excited about their team and, on the other, mourning the death of Margarita Mota.
