The first domino in the first base market has dropped: Christian Walker is headed to the Houston Astros for three years and $60 million according to the sources. Now, with Walker off the table, plenty of things have changed. Firstly, Alex Bregman’s future with the Astros seems shaky and impossible. Meanwhile, things have turned with what happens with Pete Alonso too. He now sits alone atop the list of elite free-agent first basemen, but here is the deal: despite his power, he hasn’t really been the hottest name in free agency.

Alonso had decided to bet on himself and declined an early offer by the New York Mets last month in hopes of pursuing a long-term deal. Now seven weeks into this frenzy, he is still looking for a new home. It was reported that the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were interested in him, but they aren’t frontrunners as of yet. And right now the best place for him seems to be the place he’s always called home—the New York Mets. Because MLB’s Mark Feinsand has reported that Alonso’s options are rapidly shrinking.

Pete Alonso should head back to the Mets

The Mets have made bold moves this season, the biggest of all being Juan Soto. A 15-year, $765 million deal right under the nose of the crosstown rivals. Who would have thought? With a lineup that’s now supercharged by Soto, Alonso coming back to Queens would be the final piece for the team to claim their title again since 1986. Plus for Alonso, this seems to be the best bet, as per insiders.

Mark Feinsand said, “[Alonso] is sort of a man without a market at the moment,” following the Walker deal. Feinsand suggested that the slugger could re-sign with the New York Mets on a five-year deal worth $125 million to $140 million. Then maybe include an opt-out; this way, Alonso will have the flexibility to re-enter free agency in 2026 or 2027, when the market is more first baseman-friendly.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Pete Alonso's best move to stay with the Mets, or should he explore new horizons?

Feinsand has also mentioned that Pete Alonso’s deal could stretch into January or February as the 30-year-old and his agent are looking for a better deal around $150 million. However, with the crowded market with cheap options and high-paying teams addressing other needs, he might need to settle for a little less.

The Yankees are interested in Alonso?

There were rumors that the New York Yankees were interested in Pete Alonso. Also, Brian Cashman had talked to Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent. However, it seems like things didn’t transpire, and for insiders, it seems it’s out of the picture now. Sports analyst Rich Eisen, talking on his show, said, “The Yankees, I can tell you this right now, he is not on the Yankees’ radar screen. They’re not going to sign somebody for multiple long-term years to stick at first base.” And even MLB insider Anthony DiCamo doesn’t buy into the theory that Pete Alonso will don pinstripes next.

DiCamo mentioned, “Every other destination that you can come up with, other than the Yankees, who by all accounts don’t really seem to be in on him, every other destination is a fit but…” Even he suggested that the Mets seem to be a great landing spot for Alonso, given that he loves New York City. Plus, he has a loyal fan following for the Mets too. The insiders make sense because the Yankees have a busy off-season already. They have landed Max Fried, Devin Williams, and recently Cody Bellinger. And with Bellinger and Jazz Chisolm providing plenty of flexibility in the field, first base isn’t their watchout right now.

While Alonso is surely a talent, he might not be heading for the Bronx as of now. Where do you think he will end up? Let us know!
