While the MLB world is after Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the New York Mets have decided to look elsewhere to expand their options. Their desperate need for a good bullpen has brought them to the once-star of their cross-town rivals. The New York Yankees‘ Luis Severino is now reportedly a big target of the Amazin’ Mets. Could Severino, who has suffered from injury problems since 2019, find a career resurgence at Citi Field?

The 2017 and 2018 All-Star had a tough 2023 with the Yankees. Sevy’s stint with them ended after he suffered a big injury in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sept. 9. Now the Mets are looking to try their luck with the 29-year-old. What is it that has built their interest in the man who once had the quickest fastball in the league?

Luis Severino was once the fastest pitcher in MLB. With a fastball that regularly used to go above 95mph, he was a star that can now add to the Mets bullpen. Seeing how the club struggled immensely due to a lack of depth in their pitching lineup, an experienced hand like Severino could stabilize their team beyond belief.

Now with this, the Mets have made it clear that Yamamoto may be their target but they are willing to go after other players as well. This move could also be something of a match made in heaven for both the team and Severino. The Mets are coming off of a hugely disappointing season while Severino has also failed to meet the lofty standards he set in 2017/18. His ERA in 2023 was a highly disappointing 6.65. Both of them could be looking to prove a point and get a fresh start with each other.

Still, this could be quite a risky endeavor for the Amazin’ Mets. Though it is known to all that the former Pinstriper is one of the most talented pitchers currently in the game, there is a slight problem. He’s been plagued with injuries since his All-Star break in 2018. Since 2019, Severino has failed to finish even one season in a healthy condition. The Mets, who already have had troubles with injuries, could be looking at another highly risky player.

Are there any more pitchers that the Mets could potentially go after?

The Amazin’ Quest of the Amazin’ Mets for an Amazin’ Pitcher

The Mets have Kodai Senga as their starting pitcher. After him, though, the list starts dwindling. Their need for a good partner for Senga is why they are so enthusiastically pursuing Yoshinobu Yamamoto. But what if he chooses someone else? In that case, the Mets can go after another one of the ex-Yankees –  Jordan Montgomery. With an ERA of 3.42, Monty was one of the most consistent pitchers in 2023. The World Champion would make a great addition to the Mets roster.

There is also the option of reuniting with David Robertson. Though they traded him in 2023 after their disappointing season, he has the experience and know-how about the Mets structure to make it work. The Mets have quite a lot of options but who they go after right now will shape up their 2024.
