The New York Yankees have been dealt another blow. With Nestor Cortes Jr. and Anthony Rizzo on the IL, they have barely recovered from the captain missing two months of the season. While Aaron Judge is back with full power, a pitcher who found his rhythm late in the season is now out. And Judge can’t handle it.
Luis Severino has been in a terrible slump almost all season long. And yet, the Yankees’ front office insisted on putting him out there, day after day. At first, it may have seemed like it was a token of their trust in his abilities to keep him on the roster. But after a while, even the violent Bronx had sympathy for Sevy. But he proved the worth of his $40 million contract when he had a late surge of success. Now, it’s all coming tumbling down.

Sevy landed on the IL on Friday, September 8th, after experiencing severe pain in his body. Medical professionals recommended long-term rest for the 29-Year-Old to recover from extreme left oblique tightness. The same injury that has kept Shohei Ohtani out of a few games might see Luis Severino exit from the Bronx. It’s the pitcher’s last season before he hits free agency, and it seems highly unlikely that the Yankees would be willing to keep him.

Aaron Judge, in an interview after yesterday’s game, got emotional talking about his teammate. He gave a long pause after the interviewer’s question ended, then said, “That’s a tough one. Coming up with Sevy all through the years, I just know the type of competitor he is. He leaves it out there every single day. The setbacks he’s had through his career and continuing to show up and it could be one of the last times he throws here at Yankee Stadium. I really don’t know if I have the words just yet.”
The looming free agency might be a reason why the Yankees pushed Sevy so hard this season. They could determine his worth from how he gave it all in possibly his last year in New York, but Sevy slumped. His resurgence came a little too late and while the Yankees are loathe to upend the status quo, the right-hander might just have played his last game in the Bronx.
The Captain Wants Sevy in Pinstripes
The last few years have plagued Severino with injuries that have affected his performance. This latest one might be the last straw for the Yankees, who are under intense fire from fans to build up a better roster. While many have sympathy for Luis Severino, they may not want him in New York any longer. But that’s not how the captain feels.

“It’s a little emotional. It’s a lot of unknown. I’d love to see him in pinstripes a little bit longer, that’s for sure. I’ve enjoyed my time with him, he’s won us a lot of big games,” he told The New York Post.
Whatever the future may hold, let’s hope the struggling pitcher heals up properly.
