It has been an exciting weekend for baseball. As MLB teams wrap up their last few games before the All-Star break, all franchises are building future rosters with the ongoing draft. And as expected, the school making the most headlines is Louisiana State University.
Notably, LSU is just coming off a historic win at the national championship. The team faced the Florida Gators in an intense final but ultimately ended a long 14-year College World Series victory drought. Even if one fan went home disappointed, it was an unforgettable day for the team. And now, two of their star players have made league history with their draft selections.
For the first time ever, teammates are picked as No. 1 and No. 2 for MLB Draft

Baseball players, whether professional or amateur, break records all the time. What’s unique about this is that Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, LSU Tigers teammates, are the MLB Drafts’ top two picks. This has never happened before.

Sure, MLB has seen No. 1 and No. 3 picks before – Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer out of UCLA in 2011, and Bob Horner and Hubie Brooks out of Arizona State. But Skenes and Crews are something new because, according to popular debate, either one of them could have been the first pick.
Although the honor went to Skenes, with Crews at No. 2, both of their stats were extraordinary. Crews had a batting average usually above .500. In his three years at LSU, the ballplayer had 58 home runs in 196 games and is also quick enough to man the center field.

Paul Skenes is no less impressive. He pitches at 100 mph regularly and has posted a 1.69 ERA with a ridiculous 15.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Interestingly, or perhaps worryingly, these numbers are amazing, but there is also some cause or concern.
Incredible stats are analogous to increased chances of injury
Skenes is being heralded as the second coming of Stephen Strasburg, one of the best pitchers MLB has ever seen. However, with the type of power and movement required for the way these pitchers throw, the human body suffers a lot of wear and tear. The last few years of Strasburg’s career have been impeded by injuries and he may never pitch again. Other prodigies, like Jacob deGrom and Dustin May, are recovering from multiple surgeries.

But then again, these players have also been the recipients of multiple awards and if they are meant to happen, injuries will take place anytime. Now, Skenes will now join the Pittsburgh Pirates while Crews join the Washington Nationals. The MLB world cannot wait to see what they bring to the table!
