In all the years that America has played baseball, rarely has any player been as revered as Jackie Robinson. Not even Babe Ruth, some might say. A champion of the sport but an even bigger advocate of racial equality, Robinson was the first Black player to break the color barrier. Since the 1880s, African-American players had been forced to play in a league of their own, called the Negro Leagues. But then, on April 15, 1947, the iconic player stepped up to bat with the Brooklyn Dodgers. 76 years later to the day, MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson Day to honor this prolific player’s tremendous legacy.

In the 21st century, not many fans know the role the Negro Leagues played in shaping baseball history. But Major League Baseball has made sure to spread awareness in recent decades. First celebrated in 2004, April 15 sees every player in the major leagues commemorate the former athlete in some way. And given the scale of the celebration, fans have shared their sentiment.

In 1997, MLB retired the former second baseman’s jersey number 42 across all its teams. Robinson was the first player to receive the honor in any sport. When a day dedicated to him rolled around, it was decided that all players would wear the number 42 on their backs. Regardless of what their actual jerseys said.

In this day and age of social media, MLB and its teams made sure to give their respects to the legendary personality on Twitter, as did fans.

One fan argued that Robinson is underrated.

FOX Sports shared the iconic movie on Robinson’s life called 42, in which Chadwick Boseman starred as the former baseballer. Unfortunately, as of 2023, the world doesn’t have either of these men but their legacy continues!

Fifty years after his passing, Robinson continues to influence the sports world even today.
