Yuli Gurriel has been in talks with a few teams regarding a contract, but as of now, the Cuban pro baseballer remains a free agent. Having played for the Houston Astros since 2016, Gurriel has regularly produced great numbers. He helped lead the team to its World Series wins in 2017  as well as 2022. However, considering his age, fans are speculating on the reason why the Astros won’t extend La Piña’s contract.

After talks with the Miami Marlins failed even after coming close to a deal, the 38-year-old’s future is undetermined. The baseball preseason is about to start but it’s uncertain where Gurriel is going to end up. While a lot of people want him to continue on the Astros’ roster, GM Dana Brown recently weighed on what he wants for the team going forward.

The Houston team signed first baseman Jose Abreu back in November and now has a great roster for the upcoming season. However, with one spot still empty, it looks like they want to focus on younger talent. Brown recently spoke on the situation, “When you signed (Jose) Abreu it’s makes it tough to go out and get Gurriel because it’s more of a want as opposed to a need. We love the player and would love to have him back, but we have to figure out if there’s any room where he can get at-bats.”

Even though Astros fans would love to see Gurriel back on the team, people seem to be appreciating how honestly and frankly Brown spoke.

Dana Brown truly knows how to properly answer a question without stirring up people.

While it’s true what Brown said about want and not need, Gurriel might fizzle out in the last years of his career despite being a two-time World Series Champion.
