Baseball is more than just a sport in the United States of America. The unending lists of college baseball players from which only 7,000 make it to the minor leagues can definitely attest to it. From a very young age, kids start preparing for a journey that can’t be accomplished without passion, dedication, and hard work. And this dream only finally reaches fruition in Major League Baseball. Similar was the story for young Drew Maggi, who was picked in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB draft.

However, despite spending almost 13 years in the minor league circuit, Maggi wasn’t among the 10% of players who made it to the Major League. But now, 13 years after the start of a dream, the infielder is one call away from his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates drafted Maggi in the 2010 draft. For five years, Maggi stood with the Pirates but never made it to the Big Leagues. In 2015, Maggi signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a minor league free agent. Within one year, he moved to the Dodgers farm system, before going to Cleveland, Minnesota, Philadelphia, and finally returning to the Pirates. But now, the infielder, with a vast amount of minor league experience, is back in the Pirates setup and has made it to the active major league roster.

While talking about this monumental event in his life, and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, Maggi said, “This is where it all started for me. This whole year has been a big flashback of my younger self. I’m really happy with how it all turned out. I know that 13 years is really hard. There were a lot of ups and downs, a lot of different people, injuries, a lot of stuff happens. You never know when your days are numbered. So, being here, it feels right.”

Notably, before their game against the Reds on Sunday, the Pirates brought up Maggi from Double-A’s and put Bryan Reynolds on the bereavement list. In order to accommodate Maggi on the 40-man roster, Ji-man Choi was moved to the 60-day injured list.
