Fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers — brace yourselves! 2024 is going to be a season unlike any other. The star-studded team — the Dodgers, with the addition of Japanese aces Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto — isn’t aiming for more than just another World Series title. It’s a cultural phenomenon across the Pacific Ocean that they’re looking at.

The $1 billion spent from the Dodgers’ pocket is not just an investment in two elite players. Instead, it’s an investment in a passionate international fanbase. Even if that fanbase means other league members. Since the era of Hideo Nomo’s iconic rise in the 1990s, the Dodgers have a soft spot in the hearts of Japanese baseball fans. This passion has only intensified with Ohtani and Yamamoto’s arrival in LA. The Pacific League is proof.

The excitement of the upcoming season isn’t just brewing in Los Angeles. Recent social media posts of former Orix Buffaloes teammates came to light. They were seen sporting the Dodgers gear, cheering for the team, now home to their ex-teammate Yamamoto. What better way to support and celebrate a fellow player and his team on the massive international platform? Well, this gesture is not restricted to just Yoshi.

Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com shared that “the Dodgers were searched on Google twice as often in Japan as they were in the United States.” Such reports mirror the impact Shotime and Yoshi (currently in LA) have back home. Even the Japanese publications are said to preview the Dodgers’ season with keen attention like never.

The 25-year-old newbie’s Cactus League debut against the Texas Rangers was an impressive show of pitching dominance.
