The New York Yankees were once a famed dynasty. Even today their name evokes reverence with the iconic pinstripes they wear. But the son has not surpassed his father and instead let his legacy fizzle out. Bronx fans still believe that for all his faults, George Steinbrenner cared more for the team than Hal. But his methods to win inspired such fear that even Derek Jeter was scared.

Never one to stir controversy, the Captain had his own way of handling the media and the team. But when it came to ‘The Boss’, he ruled over all. From his strict grooming policies to his obsession with winning, not everyone could keep up. And that’s the fear that had not just Jeter, but every Yank looking over their shoulder.

In today’s world, the unemployed don’t always lead comfortable lives. Job security is something everyone looks for, including baseball players. When Derek Jeter played for the Yankees, he knew his talent helped the team. But conversely, not every player can give their 100% every time. And the moment the slip-ups became too much was what George Steinbrenner seized.

In an interview with Harold Reynolds before his Hall of Fame induction, Jeter looked back on his time in pinstripes. “Was looking over my shoulder till the last game I played man. No, no, no, that’s one thing in New York man, somebody else is coming,” the retired slugger says.

“You know, I came up in a culture if you didn’t do your job, the Boss will get rid of you. He will get somebody else without hesitation. So we were always looking over our shoulder.”

Coming from a man widely beloved by the city, these words may seem groundless. But it was the reality that the Yankees lived with the Boss and the Bronx.

No one can love you like the Bronx does but no one can hate you like the Bronx does either. When asked around the league, most would name the Yankees fanbase as the most intense. Even Jeter admitted it when he commented on the heat the management has been receiving this season.

“Fans are critical, you expect it. I mean, they were critical when I played and you know, Yankee fans expect you to win,” he said. And indeed, for a franchise that may not have existed as long as other MLB teams, the Yankees sure have a loyal fanbase.
