Derek Jeter has a never-ending love for the New York Yankees. He was a die-hard Yankees fan long before joining the team to spend all of his career. However, the journey of the former Yankees’ shortstop transitioning from basketball to baseball includes many high school stories. One of which was communicated by one of his roommates.
Jeter’s love for the Yankees started very early, and at 8, he decided to be a Yankee. In the book Captain-The Journey of Derek Jeter by Ion O’Connor, Monter Glasper, one of his roommate reveals the passion of young Jeter for the Yankees.
Derek Jeter’s Transition From Basketball to Baseball

Although during high school, Jeter got into the basketball team of Kalamazoo Blues, his heart was in baseball, and his transition to it was imminent.The 5x World Series champion played basketball in winter and baseball in the spring. O’Connor says that Jeter played basketball to be fit and stay in shape for baseball.
Jeter won a roster spot on the basketball team. His teammates from the basketball teams say that during the trip for regional and nationals, Jeter wore the Yankees gear while the rest of the team wore the Michael Jordan jerseys or Detroit Pistons T-shirts.
Similarly, Monter Glasper, one of the former Yankees’ shortstop roommates, said Jeter was so serious about baseball and his favorite team. His roommate further explained that his dedication to the team was so intense that one day it even extended to his bedroom.
“He even wore Yankee boxers to bed. But you could tell he was never joking when he said he’d end up playing for them.”
Jeter put his heart and soul into his game to play for the Yankees one day. In his early years, he shared his wishes to play for the Yankees with his parents, who supported the young boy in pursuing his dreams.
The Support From His Parents Made Him a Yankee

In his autobiography, Derek Jeter talks about the support that he got from his parents. He says his parents taught him that he also needs to focus his mindset outside the field. They taught him to have a positive attitude and think like the best player in the world.
In the book, Derek writes, “They told me that I couldn’t just be a good baseball player. I had to work hard, take care of my body with proper diet and rest, and do well in everything. They told me that I have to have the mindset that I wanted to be the best in everything.”
