Home/Tennis

If genes dictated destiny, Jaden Agassi would be swinging a tennis racket, not a baseball bat. But fate had other plans. Instead of Wimbledon dreams, he’s chasing World Baseball Classic glory. And here’s the plot twist—he’s not donning a USA jersey. He’s chosen Germany, his mother Steffi Graf’s homeland, as his battleground. From a tennis dynasty to a baseball odyssey, Jaden Agassi is proving that sometimes the apple doesn’t just fall far from the tree—it lands on an entirely different field!

While Agassi Jr. is still not a known face in the MLB circuit, he debuted in 2021 in the MLB Draft League and played for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the MLB Draft League in 2024. He is a designated pitcher, and his passion for throwing fastballs led him to baseball. However, being the son of the tennis power couple, Agassi Jr. has the baggage of carrying their legacy. As he is now debuting on the world stage, will he be able to justify his family legacy? Fans would also surely be interested to know if Agassi Jr. can be seen in the MLB in the coming years.

Journey from tennis to baseball

While it was expected that Jaden Agassi would grab a racket, he ended up grabbing a glove! However, it is surprising that after spending time in the MLB Draft League until last year, he opted to play for Germany. Well, baseball infrastructure in the US is undoubtedly the best, but competition is also high. Agassi Jr. finished 2024 with a 2.96 ERA and 9.2 K/9, which is not enough to get drafted in MLB. While he is dreaming of an international debut, getting to play for the US is much more difficult considering the competition here. Hence, it seems a good move by him to represent his maternal country and get onto the big stage at the earliest.

I started playing baseball when I was six years old in T-ball,” Agassi Jr. told MLB.com over the phone. Yes, he started that early that too in the US circuit, but how come this passion for baseball came from Agassi Jr. when he was born and brought up in a tennis culture? It is because of his knack for hitting things as hard as he could. This proved detrimental for him in tennis, where he found it hard to keep that ball between the lines, but his hard-hitting nature came in handy in baseball. Last year in the MLB Draft League, he threw a low-90s sinker that can touch 94, along with a mid-80s changeup and slider.

What’s ahead for Jaden Agassi?

Now that Jaden Agassi is all set to represent Germany at the upcoming World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, fans would love to watch him on the MLB circuit. It would be pure nostalgia to witness the son of a former US tennis icon in the park. Well, that’s something only time can answer. Agassi Jr. is only 23 now, and he is yet to reach his prime. While his past numbers are enough to get into the MLB, he shows a lot of potential and can be a versatile pitcher. Considering he is making some good moves at the World Baseball Classic, suitors might be interested in him.
