In the realm of professional sports, we’re often celebrating achievements and milestones, the highs of competition, and the exhilarating journey of the game. But every once in a while, life delivers a blow so profound, so deeply personal, that the cheers fade and the spotlight dims. One such moment comes in the news involving ex-New York Yankees star Brett Gardner and his family.
Friday — March 21, 2025 — was the day tragedy struck the Gardner family. Brett Gardner and his family were on vacation when they received the news that his 14-year-old son, Miller, had died. Miller became ill on the trip and sadly passed away in his sleep. It has also been reported that some other members of the Gardner family also fell ill while on vacation at around the same time, though the details of their illness and the location of their trip remain undisclosed. The suddenness of Miller’s passing has left the family, and the wider baseball community reeling.
As per the statement from the family: “With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”

They called Miller a bright young man who was passionate about “football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends,” and who “lived life to the fullest every single day.” Just like his father, even Miller wore a No. 11 jersey and was a wide receiver and defensive end for his high school, Pinewood Prep in Summerville, S.C. And when it came to the baseball diamond, the 14-year-old was an outfielder and pitcher.
Their words shared by the family tell the story of a life cut tragically short, leaving an emptiness words cannot describe. Brett Gardner is more than a baseball player. He is a family man. He and his wife, Jessica Clendenin, who married in 2007, have a deeper bond of which their philanthropy and their tight-knit family life are evidence.

During this difficult time, the family has requested privacy while they grieve the loss of their son. Amidst this, the baseball community extends their support to them.

A shared grief: The baseball world mourns with the Gardners
The Yankees organization expressed their deep grief. And offered their unwavering support to the Gardner family, recognizing them as an integral part of the Yankees family. Here’s their touching statement on the matter: “Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn’t just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller. We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature. Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy at this time. May Miller rest in peace.”
Separately, his former teammates also shared their shock and condolences. Even Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone conveyed his grief over the news, saying that he is too “heartbroken.” New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza also conveyed his sincere thoughts over the tragic passing away of his friend’s son.
Brett and Jessica Gardner knew their platforms could be used for good. They’ve hosted luncheons for active-duty servicemen and women, visited children’s hospitals, and donated to Ronald McDonald House and the Salvation Army. Those charities are underpinned by a deep sense of empathy, and a desire to improve other people’s lives. That makes the situation of their child’s loss even more tragic and ironic. A twist of fate for a couple who dedicated their lives to helping others.

Unfortunately, the Gardners’ loss is not the only tragedy to strike the baseball world this year. The early months of 2025 have been filled with heartbreaking deaths. Brian Matusz, Former MLB pitcher, died at 37. Jorge Luis Valdés, a Cuban baseball great, passed away at 63. Scott Sauerbeck, former MLB pitcher, died at 53. These losses, each a unique story of sorrow, cast a long shadow. And these all happened even though we didn’t pass 3 months this year.
The news of Miller Gardner’s passing is a stark reminder that life is precious. And that even the heroes we cheer on the field face unimaginable pain. The baseball world pauses, its usual roar silenced by a shared grief. A reminder that life’s true treasures are not found on the field. Rest in Peace, Miller Gardner.
