The New York Yankees may have lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates. But they scored big on Anthony Volpe. The rookie shortstop has had a rollercoaster of a rookie season as he adjusts to the majors. 2023 has set the scene for a breakout 2024 season for the second coming of Derek Jeter. Volpe is already displaying glimpses of his legendary clutch performance.

The original ‘Captain’ and ‘the Kid’ got a chance to meet at Old Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium on September 9th. The current shortstop’s grin revealed everything he felt about meeting his predecessor. The last few years have brought a number of comparisons between the two, and Volpe is proving they’re no fluke.

When one plays a game for almost 200 days of the year, mistakes are guaranteed. Anthony Volpe’s season has not been free of trouble, with hitting problems and a lack of defense. The latter will improve as the rookie gains more experience in MLB. While some fans may let it slide, Volpe will not.

In another instance of brilliant clutch hitting this season, the 22-year-old shortstop tied the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh. The move came after Volpe butchered a defensive move in the previous inning as if to make up for his mistakes. This wasn’t the first time it happened either. Unfortunately, the win at PNC Park ultimately went to the home team but it was some excellent play nevertheless.

When the Yankees surprisingly lost the rubber game of a series against the Detroit Tigers on August 31st, fans witnessed another game-tying home run from Volpe. If this isn’t proof of clever clutch play, what is? Derek Jeter was much the same during his time in the Bronx, as if he could make his team win with sheer willpower. To most, Volpe deserves the comparisons. Even the retired Captain praised him.

Derek Jeter is Impressed By His New York Yankees Successor

Questions about each other are impossible to miss when the media often lumps the two together. While Volpe has spoken extensively on why he admires Jeter, the ex-shortstop apparently feels the same.

I think he’s handled himself [well]. It’s tough playing here in New York as a young player when the expectations are high. From everything I can tell, the way he handles himself stands out the most,” Jeter said on Old Timers’ Day.
