The New York Yankees and their old reliables have failed this season. It has been the year of the rookies coming out of the woodwork to save the club. But one has played since Opening Day, the second coming of Derek Jeter. While Anthony Volpe’s season, who signed for $720k and one year, has not been free of its shortcomings, the shortstop is dependable in his way. And he may have even beaten Carlos Correa.

The 2022 off-season became known for the Carlos Correa saga as the shortstop juggled between teams. After opting out of his contract with the Minnesota Twins, the 28-Year-Old first made a trip to San Francisco and then New York, but both the Giants and the Mets disapproved of his physical. Correa ultimately re-signed with the Twins on a $200 million, six-year deal. Even Volpe reacted to the wild ride. But unfortunately, 2023 has not been his year.

In all fairness, it’s probably an inappropriate comparison. Anthony Volpe has long been the top prospect in the Yankees organization, often compared to the last captain. But for all intents and purposes, the 22-Year-Old is still a rookie. Correa, on the other hand, is a seasoned veteran of the game with an AL Rookie of the Year award in his bag from 2017. But as all athletes are wont to do, the Twins shortstop is going through one of the worst seasons of his career.

It has allowed others to shine, and one of them is the Yankees shortstop. Bronx fan @NY_EvilEmpire posted a stat comparison of the two players this season and wherever it matters, the kid leads. With a 3.6 WAR to Correa’s 1.1, 20 home runs to his 16, and a .705 OPS to his .695, Volpe is undeniably in the lead. Not to be outdone, Correa is better with a .305 OBP to Volpe’s .296 and 58 RBIs to his 57.

The caption simply says, “Just going to leave this here for reference.” While historically the Twin Cities’ shortstop has a better record, Volpe’s MLB debut leaves no room for comparison. The two have butted heads before, where the Twins actually managed to win against the Yankees early on in the season. Volpe impressed Correa thoroughly and then he pulled ahead in the season.

Nevertheless, fans have varying opinions to share.

Baseball Fans Side With Volpe But Sympathize With Correa

MLB fans are not particularly forgiving of players with bad statistics, especially on social media. While many have sympathized with Correa, others are siding with Volpe. Between the kid and the veteran, fans’ loyalties are divided.

One was vocal about his support for the ‘kid.’

One stuck up for his defensive abilities.

One fan thought both were ‘below average’.

Another chimed in with a similar response.

Whatever one says about each, it has been a strange year for baseball. Perhaps the two will deserve a better comparison as they find their true forms.
