Kasumba Dennis is the embodiment of the American Dream. A teen from Uganda, a country not exactly known for baseball, Kasumba took the internet by storm last year. Enamored with the sport but not having the means for proper training, he used whatever he could to get his body in shape. From bricks to tires, Kasumba used anything and everything to train as an athlete. He just wanted to play in the Major Leagues one day.

The power of the internet prevailed and after toiling hard, MLB’s Draft League finally offered him the chance to come to the US. The teen made his debut for the Frederick Keys in June and spent the month wowing audiences. Now that period of his life is over but Kasumba has bigger dreams to fulfil. In the meanwhile, he returns home to his family.

There’s nothing quite like coming together with loved ones at the end of a long day to enjoy good food. For Kasumba, the day was technically a month, and he is finally back home. One of the reasons that he had trouble getting a visa approved for America was that he has no parents to speak of. His immediate family includes only a grandmother and sister, who welcomed him back with open arms.

The Ugandan teen posted a sweet video of his first night back, sharing dinner with his old teammates as well as coaches. In the caption of the tweet, Kasumba mentions that his grandmother is the one who presented him with the hearty feast.

The last part of the caption is a hashtag that says ‘Focusing Forward.’ This youngster’s US journey might be over for now but that doesn’t mean he won’t be back.

The dream is not over yet

Pursuing a profession is well and good but as one might imagine, schooling comes first. Kasumba Dennis is back in Uganda to finish high school before he can return to the USA. As René Rivera, Kasumba’s manager at Frederick Keys told The Trentonian, the player’s visa was only for the first half. But everyone involved in his journey is working to make his comeback a certainty.

Baseball may not be a popular sport in his country but as the teenager said in a tweet once, “I don’t let where I come from stop me from dreaming big.” The MLB world has high hopes for him and if all goes well, he’ll be back before long.
