Justin Verlander is a free agent this year and although he’s 39 years old, he’s one of the best pitchers available. Verlander is coming off a stellar year with the Houston Astros in which he took home the Cy Young Award. Coming back from Tommy John surgery, he outperformed all expectations en route to possibly his best season yet.

This bodes well for Verlander as he is now a free agent and in the last years of his prime. Although he is yet to sign with any team, this might be the last professional contract for the veteran ace. And if reports are true, then the New York Mets are clear favorites to sign the World Series champ.
The New York Mets want Justin Verlander
The New York Mets are reportedly very keen on signing Verlander this offseason. He is at the top of the Mets list, according to Andy Martino of SNY. In a recent Tweet, Martino said “Free agency is moving fast now. Justin Verlander front and center for Mets”

This news comes at a time when pitchers are being signed at a rapid pace. On top of that, Justin Verlander is a top free agent and will receive proposals from many teams.
Teams will be offering Verlander a high-value short-term contract to make the most of his prime. The main reason behind the Mets being the favorites is that they do not have their star pitcher Jacob deGrom with them anymore. Notably, deGrom recently signed a 5-year deal with the Texas Rangers.

Although Verlander is still one of the best pitchers in the MLB, he will be 40 years old by the time the 2023 season starts. Add to this his recent injury history and teams have a reason to avoid giving him a long-term deal. It will be very interesting to see where Verlander signs and what kind of deal he gets.
Verlander’s Expected Contract:
Justin Verlander will probably sign a 2-year deal with a third-year option. Given he is already 39, probably no team would be willing to offer a longer contract. However, one thing is sure Verlander is set to have an eventful free agency.
