Top free-agent signings are expected to make an immediate impact. But Justin Verlander has had a tough start to his tenure with the New York Mets, to say the least. Justin Verlander proved his worth with a stellar 2022 season in which he helped the Houston Astros win the World Series. When the Mets signed him, there was wholesale excitement at the deal. But expectations have dropped following a rough start. Most recently, Verlander revealed that nothing is coming easy to him this season, and he’s struggled for every single out. But the star pitcher is determined to fight and improve his game.
According to Newsday, Verlander said, “I’m not paid the way I’m paid — and I don’t expect — to pitch like that. Right now it’s too hard. It’s like having to grind for every out. Nothing is coming easy. Not that anything is ever easy, but when I’m right, it’s a whole hell of a lot easier. I’m not just OK being mediocre or subpar. It’s not in my DNA. I’m going to work harder than anybody on the planet to fix it.”

This is an impressive attitude from the Mets’ $86 million pitcher as he aims to make a comeback. But it has to be quick as the New York-based team is struggling to win games at the moment. Moreover, Verlander’s fellow star pitcher has also struggled to get a rhythm going this season.
Max Scherzer has had his own struggles this year
Although Max Scherzer is pitching slightly better than Justin Verlander, his season has been a disappointment as well. Scherzer has struggled to pitch consistently and was even banned during the season. This has disrupted his form as he fights to get back to his top form. The team will need both him and Verlander to return to their best as they look to make a comeback.
