Derek Jeter's words haunt the Yankees—are they now 'just the Yankees' in this rivalry?

For the first time since 2013, New York is no longer pinstriped. The New York Yankees have been swept by their Queens neighbors. Little brother has taken control of the city and that has left the fanbase seething. Amidst this tragedy, a video of their legendary captain Derek Jeter – where he explained just how one-sided the rivalry used to be. More importantly, it makes one realize just how steep the fall has been for the Bronx Bombers.

Jeter was the central part of the Yankees during its golden 20 years. The face of the franchise, he played at a time when the Bronx Bombers were the undisputed kings of New York. They had a different swagger and regularly dominated the New York Mets. But the words that once were used to troll the Metsies have now turned into a horrifying memory for the Yankees. Even though Derek Jeter recently grabbed headlines for his superstition, he didn’t have any of those beliefs when battling against the Mets.

ESPN interviewed Derek Jeter in 2023. While reminiscing about his career, Jeter explained how he never had any hard feelings for the Mets. “For us, there wasn’t a hatred for the Mets. It was ‘Just the Mets,’” Jeter said. This is in stark contrast to what the Mets felt then for the Yankees. The utter domination that the Bronx Bombers enjoyed gave the Metsies a sick feeling.

But as Derek Jeter said, the Yankees couldn’t care less about the Orange and Blue squad. After all, while the Mets did enjoy a good few years – they were no match for the sheer domination that the Yankees had. That was even more visible in the 2000 World Series when the Bronx Bombers won 4-1 against the Mets. More importantly, Derek Jeter was the MVP of that series.

That highlights just how great Captain Clutch’s record was against the Queens’ side. With a .364 batting average, 13 homers, and 44 RBIs in 88 games – Jeter almost annihilated the Metsies. And that is what makes the current situation so heartbreaking for the Yankees.

New York Yankees remain a shadow of Derek Jeter’s dynasty

Have an interesting take?

When the Yankees won their 2009 World Series fans wondered whether this was the start of a new era. But then, who’d have guessed that it was a swansong for the 90s dynasty? The New York Yankees haven’t stepped into a Fall Classic since then. How could they fall so hard that “Just the Mets” have now turned into the Mighty Mets? The answer lies somewhere inside their clubhouse. Despite being the richest team in baseball, the Bronx Bombers no longer have that cutting-edge feel to them that they once had under George Steinbrenner.

The late Boss would take the strictest of steps if it meant making his team competitive. However, fans blame Hal Steinbrenner for not being as ambitious as his father. But, if one looks at the Bronx Bombers’ payroll – it has remained high no matter what. But that hasn’t changed their luck and part of the blame goes to their roster construction. 2024’s Subway Series showed in detail just how imbalanced the Yankees’ hitting staff is. So, if Aaron Judge or the about-to-be-free agent Juan Soto aren’t performing, the team has no one else to rely on. On top of that their bullpen is severely depleted due to injuries and the Soto trade during the offseason.

That was a huge risk and now it is coming back to bite them. While their Queens neighbors are no longer “Just the Mets,” the Pinstripes are at risk. Could they see themselves becoming “Just the Yankees?” That would certainly be a sight to see. What do you make of the Yankees getting swept off by the Mets? Sharing below.
