Injuries are anyway brutal for every team! While that’s a given, for the Los Angeles Angels, these hit like a gut punch. Their superstar Mike Trout hasn’t been able to play a proper season for quite a few years due to injuries. And adding to the list of dilemmas is Anthony Rendon. His time in LA has been marred with health issues, and the trend continues.

According to Angels General Manager Perry Minasian, the third baseman is set to undergo hip surgery. And his recovery is expected to be long-term – unsure of the timeline. Or if and when Anthony Rendon will be back on the field this season.

This is a huge blow to the team because Rendon has already missed the end of the last season with an oblique strain. And now his recovery setback, as per The Athletic’s Sam Blum, is a huge bummer.

This update only adds to the growing frustration for the 34-year-old who hasn’t even played 58 games in a season since his all-star year back in 2019. Last season Anthony Rendon could hit just zero home runs in 57 games – urrgghhh! Meanwhile, his contract with the Los Angeles Angels runs through 2026. But given his health concern, it’s unclear how much play by him is actually possible.

Are you aware of his stats? Get ready to be shocked then! If he never suits up in the reds again, he will have played just 257 games out of a possible 1,032 games, all while earning over $228 million as per Spotrac. Clearly, A costly tenure, to say the least.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Anthony Rendon the worst contract in MLB history, or is there still hope for redemption?

Have an interesting take?

And Angels fans are not taking his injury update well at all. The outburst on social media is brutal.

MLB fans lash out massively on Anthony Rendon

Frustrations boiled over in the socials, and one fan bluntly said, “Just retire, bro.” It’s hard to argue with that kind of sentiment. Every team wants to move forward, and the Angels already have rough contracts over the years. But Anthony Rendon’s deal might just win the crown. Since July 2023, he hasn’t hit a home run and he is the highest-paid third baseman in the league. That’s a dream gig—if you get it!

One more comment summarized how Rendon feels unfamiliar now: “I have completely forgotten about this guy.” If one doesn’t play, of course, they lose their relevance. And it seems like even the Los Angeles Angels have lost interest in him. Minasian has made it clear, “When Anthony has played, he hasn’t been productive. He’s going to have to come in and earn it. There are no handouts” – a clear signal! They also signed Yoan Moncada for a year. So the writing is on the wall—they knew not to put their trust in Rendon.

Another user mentioned, “I mean, he hasn’t made any impact, so it’s not like he’s going to be missed.” What’s to argue about that? Anthony Rendon’s career has taken such a negative turn. Before he set foot in Anaheim, he was a force with the Washington Nationals. He gave them seven strong years; he got two Silver Sluggers and three top-six MVP finishes. The Angels missed out on Gerrit Cole and pivoted to him. And easily, they locked in one of the worst contracts in baseball history, perhaps.

Sarcastically a fan said, “Congratulations, Anthony Rendon, on your annual vacation.” No doubt, it’s a harsh jab. But what makes the entire thing sting more is Rendon’s own attitude over the game. He doesn’t seem serious at all. Anthony Rendon, amidst all the injury chaos, had said, “Baseball has never been a top priority for me. This is a job. I do this to make a living.” How would such statements sit well with others? Especially when he is pocketing over $38 million and barely playing!

But the most brutal comment went, “How could you ever show your face around an MLB stadium again? Seriously, he should be embarrassed and give back all the money.” Of course, Rendon isn’t refunding a cent of that contract. But this closure clears some space in the lineup and could open a roster spot for Kenley Jansen. It’s not how things were supposed to go, but it feels like the only way to go.
