It’s painful for a team to see that a player they let go turned out to be great. But what if they lost two? That’s exactly what happened with the St. Louis Cardinals when they decided to let Adolis Garcia and Zac Gallen go from their team. The two players are now playing in the World Series in opposing teams, with both having had a good performance. St. Louis Cardinals must be wondering “What if?”.

The Cards had drafted both of these players, but for a variety of reasons, let them go. They would not have thought that the players they deemed unneeded would go on to play the World Series.

Cardinals’ draftees to World Series players

In 2016, the Cardinals drafted Zac Gallen, and in 2017 they appointed Adolis Garcia after he left Cuba. Garcia played for the team from 2018 to 19. His performances, though good, were not what they are right now. So the team designated him for an assignment in 2019. They then traded the player to the Texas Rangers. Still, at least he got a chance to play for the team. Zac Gallen, on the other hand, never got a place. He was drafted in 2016 and then sent to play in the minor leagues. Then in 2017, he was traded to the Miami Marlins. The Cards clearly never rated the player as they did not even give him one look at the team.

That was in 2017, in 2023 things are different. St. Louis Cardinals are struggling. Adolis Garcia has had a star-making postseason hitting 8 home runs, 5 of them consecutively. His walk-off home run in game 1 of the World Series has become part of the Rangers’ lore. Zac Gallen, too, is performing exceptionally well. In game 5 of the Fall Classic, Gallen gave no hits for 6 innings and only gave out a single run in all 7 that he pitched. Apart from this, his postseason performances have had a big impact on the Diamondbacks’ success.

Their performances must have given heartache to the St. Louis fans. The team has not won a World Series since 2011, not appearing in one since 2013. Now the players they gave are in Fall Classic. They must be wondering what if they had not let those players go?

St. Louis Cardinals 2023 season

The Cards had a shockingly terrible 2023. They had a record of 71-91 and finished last in the NL Central division. This was a tremendous shock for the fans as just a year ago, in 2022, the Cardinals had actually won the division. In 2022, they had a record of 93-69. So to completely reverse that number in just a year is hard to digest for the fans.

And now to see players that the team let go face each other in the World Series must be sending them a world of pain. The despair might not be over soon. However, if the team can reverse its fortunes once, maybe it can do it again. At least that thought gives hope to the fanbase. That’s all they need right now.
