Ever since Juan Soto crossed the road to the New York Mets, many fans have been scratching their heads. Not just because it’s a different pride to play for such a big franchise but also given the New York Yankees offered Soto a similar amount, $760 million, plus a $60 million signing bonus. However, the 26-year-old seemed to have taken, according to most, an interest in all the added perks by the Mets. From security for a suite to free premium tickets, Mets owner Steve Cohen sure did give it all.
However, after this transition, Yankee fans’ are more than heartbroken; they are mad. It almost feels like a betrayal to them, and adding to this feeling, the update on how Hal Steinbrenner reacted to the suite demand by Soto’s mother has come to light. Bill Madden from the Daily News reported Hal saying, “We’re gonna pay you $760 million, and you can’t afford to pay for your own suite? We don’t give away suites (which range from $600,000 to $1 million) at Yankee Stadium.” Things sure did get fiery, and Soto’s fresh statements after becoming a Met have been rather controversial, adding insult to injury.

Soto hasn’t made things easy and added on more controversies. He was out celebrating with his friends, and when the DJ played the Soto shuffle, including the iconic “Yankee, Yankee” chant. Soto’s went tight-lipped, refusing to repeat Yankee. Not just that he had a smirk and was urging others to repeat New York Mets instead. The fans’ backlash was hard; some of them highlighted how the ‘DJ was possibly trying to let him know that he made a mistake’, while a few others claimed that the team had dodged a bullet. But this isn’t the first time Soto has stirred something controversial after his move.

Just recently, Juan Soto declared, “New York has been a Mets town for a long time. I think we just need to take it to the next level.” This statement hurt the sentiments of many fans, and he received plenty of backlash. In fact, sports analyst Rich Eisen said, “What is he talking about? Juan, I’ve been in New York City for 55 years. Man, get out of here. Get out of here with your words. It’s like saying Los Angeles is a Clippers town. Get out of here. Is it a Mets city? Yeah, in your head. He only lived the Yankee life for a year.” However, Soto had his reasons behind it all.

Was family disrespect the real reason Juan Soto left?
Now, rumors were swirling that the reason Juan Soto didn’t end up joining the New York Yankees was because the team had apparently disrespected his family. There were reports earlier that the security had removed his parents from Yankee Stadium back in April; many pointed it out as the main reason behind Soto’s decision. However, it seems like the rumor is far from the truth; Juan himself came clean and said nothing of that sort happened. “That’s a lie, said Soto via ESPN’s Enrique Rojas. He also said in Spanish in an interview with Grandes en los Deportes that his family was treated well by the organization, noting that they were always helping him and his family at every given moment.
As far as joining the New York Mets goes, it’s not that far-fetched for Juan Soto to join there. Not only did they offer him the money and the suite, but they also have a great coaching staff, an awesome front office, and the foundational pieces to be successful. Soto, talking about the Mets, said, “They show me a lot of love from the standpoint of what they have for me and how they are going to try and make it comfortable for me. That’s one of the things that impresses me more, how they are going to treat the people around me and my family and stuff like that.”
