Juan Soto’s name has become synonymous with baseball’s most-coveted young star. He finally seems to have found a comforting fit with the New York Yankees. Though he has developed a camaraderie with the club, his impending free agency threatens this potential long-term bond. While the early signs point towards a perfect marriage between the player and the team, the Yanks will face stiff competition from forerunners for Soto.

While there is uncertainty about what happens after the 2024 season, the 25-year-old has left no stone unturned to bond with fellow players while he is serving in the Bronx. There are enough instances where, from the get-go, Soto integrated seamlessly with the Yankees. In fact, there were no awkward growing pains, rather just a natural camaraderie with teammates. The man whom he bonded with the most was his fellow superstar, Aaron Judge.

This immediate connection that was established fuels speculation that Soto could genuinely wish to stay in New York in the future. The Yankees, who were stung by a disappointing 2023 season, “are expected to be aggressive in their efforts to bring Soto back this offseason, even if it means giving him a contract that tops the one signed by their captain, Judge, who landed a nine-year, $360 million deal as a 30-year-old in December 2022.” This highlights their grit in building a championship-caliber team.

Soto, who has been traded twice in under two years, wishes for stability. Not only does he want to avoid the emotional roller coaster of free agency but also wishes to settle in one place and grow for the long haul. This is great since the Yankees too desire a long-term commitment. A perfect fit.

Apart from the fact that both their visions match, the Dominican’s offensive prowess is undeniable. However, some of his defensive limitations raise some red flags. On one hand, some believe he could transition to designated hitter sooner rather than later. On the other hand, this move might potentially impact the magnitude and scope of his future contract. Nevertheless, Soto is actively working to improve his outfield skills, impressing coaches and, most importantly, Captain Aaron Judge.
