One of Juan Soto’s primary reasons for growing disillusioned with the Washington Nationals was losing the hitting coach Kevin Long. However, the blow would’ve been even more heavy had it not been for Pat Roessler, the assistant hitting coach. For Soto, having a close relationship with his coaches is a must. His stint in the San Diego Padres suffered partly due to this reason. But the New York Yankees aren’t taking any risks.
Surprisingly for Soto his Yankees arrival has seen a great reunion for him. The Bronx Bombers appointed Pat Roessler as an assistant hitting coach to facilitate an easy adjustment for Soto in the Yankees ecosystem. That seems to have done the trick as Soto looks happier than ever. “He’s been helping me out big-time,” Soto said about Roessler.
Brendan Kuty of The Athletic recently interviewed Soto and Roessler. The assistant hitting coach has a long history with the Yankees. That has helped him understand the intricacies of the Pinstripes’ culture. Something that has proved to be highly beneficial for Soto. “He’s been right there, he’s a grinder,” Soto said. “He’s an old-school guy. I feel like everything that I do is, like, old-school mechanics. I feel like we’re on the same page.”

Soto went as far as to say that Roessler was “like a grandfather.” Their close relationship can be understood by the fact that the coach is often found standing in Soto’s batting cage. Roessler offers tips, suggestions, and sometimes just an attentive ear to the Childish Bambino’s words. That’s something that has made their bond stronger.
“I feel that he trusts me,” Soto said. However, while Soto is full of praises for Roessler, the coach too had some very nice words to say for the Dominican superstar.

“We all feel like family right now,” Soto said. That line may have raised the hopes of nearly every Yankees fan. Why wouldn’t Soto re-sign with a team he calls a family? While that’s speculative, Roessler shared that Soto wants to win “more than anything.” Praising Soto’s team spirit, the coach noted how the superstar always roots for his teammates even when he’s not doing good himself.
Perhaps this appointment could’ve been a genuine masterstroke by the Yankees. Giving Soto a familiar face has already made things easier for the superstar. Certainly, his on-field performances reflect that. As the season continues, one wonders just how close this family will grow up to be. Can Soto really become a New York Yankee for life?
