Injuries can happen during baseball, like in any other sport. But it is rare to see a serious incident take place away from the play. If reports are to be believed, the Los Angeles Angels are in trouble for a devastating accident that reportedly took place last year. And a man is suing the team and a former player for an incident that severely injured him.

This comes one year after the man lost his father and was diagnosed with brain cancer. The incident took place in June last year and involves a now-former Angels player. The man has chosen to sue the MLB team and its former player as well.

In June 2022, David Mermelstein was attending an Angels game with his friends to take his mind off of his troubles. But while seated in the outfield bleachers, he was hit in the face with a ball. After catching the third out of an inning, Juan Lagares reportedly hurled the ball into the crowd, thus hitting Mermelstein. The ball crushed Mermelstein’s left eye and blinded it. O.C. Register shared the news via Twitter.

In a Tweet, they said, “Man sues Angels after being blinded in left eye by ball that player allegedly hurled into crowd”. In an article, they further said, “A civil complaint filed Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court describes David Mermelstein’s left eyeball as being crushed when he was struck in the face at Angel Stadium by a ball that the complaint claims was thrown by former Angels outfielder Juan Lagares, who had just caught a third out to retire the opposing side.”

This is an extremely serious situation as Mermelstein has reportedly suffered serious injury due to the incident. Furthermore, at the time of the accident, he was recovering from his father’s recent passing and his own brain cancer diagnosis. If proven to be true, there may be serious consequences for the Angels and Lagares.

The Angels dealt with a serious fan incident earlier this year

Earlier during the season, the Angels dealt with a serious incident involving Anthony Rendon. The struggling star got into an altercation with a fan earlier this year. After a game against the Oakland Athletics, Rendon confronted a fan, grabbing their shirt and attempting to assault them. A 12-second video of the incident surfaced with divided reactions from fans. But Rendon was suspended for 4 games due to the incident. The Angels now have another serious fan issue on their plate.
