The New York Yankees have been dealt one unfortunate blow after another this season. With a lot of star players serving time on the injured list, the team has been underperforming. Fans are certainly not happy with how things are going, but if there’s one player they’re not worried about, it’s Josh Donaldson.

Earlier this season, names like Giancarlo Stanton, Harrison Bader, and Donaldson got put on the injured list. Even team captain Aaron Judge joined them for a while but he’s back to good form now. Most Bronx fans have been excited with Bader back in the game, although they’re still lukewarm about Stanton. One player they think the team can certainly do without, however, is their third baseman, who consistently disappointed in 2022. Now, just when he was due for a return, it seems like he will stay on the IL for just a little longer because of a bizarre injury.

Josh Donaldson will now return later than expected because he sliced his hand at home

In his first year with the Bronx Bombers, Donaldson became just the third Yankees player to hit a walk-off ultimate grand slam in franchise history. The other two to have done it were Babe Ruth and Jason Giambi. In the entire 2022 season, that was the only highlight of his time in pinstripes. With a total of 15 home runs and 62 RBIs, Donaldson batted .222/.308/.374 and made contact with just 75.5% of all pitches he swung at in the strike zone. It was the lowest percentage in MLB.

Needless to say, Yankee fans were livid. At the beginning of the 2023 season, when Donaldson injured his right hamstring during a game, fans’ prayers were answered. He was headed to the IL, even if it wasn’t expected to be a long stint. Now, almost a month later, the third baseman is still nowhere to be seen in the major leagues. In fact, he will remain out of sight for a little longer because of a hand injury.

Once the AL MVP, the 37-year-old seems to have fallen from grace in baseball lovers’ eyes.

New York Yankees fans leave no insult unuttered for Donaldson

When Talkin’ Baseball announced the news, most fans were elated, to say the least. They want the Yankees to keep him out longer, preferably forever.

Some mocked him by saying the injury sounded serious and that he should take whatever time was necessary to heal and recover.

One fan seemed to stand up for him, a minority if there ever was one.

Most hope that Donaldson quietly exits the season entirely.
