The New York Yankees have had somewhat of a disappointing off-season so far. That is true despite signing Aaron Judge to a new contract and bringing in Carlos Rodon. The Yankees still have a number of weaknesses that they have not yet addressed. In fact, they look to be entering the 2023 season with an almost identical squad.
The team will also depend on struggling veterans and fresh young talent to fill the holes in their squad. In fact, hitting coach Dillon Lawson recently stated that one veteran, in particular, might make a comeback in 2023. This led to anger and disbelief among Yankees fans.

The Yankees hired assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson this off-season. His appointment has been eventful so far, to say the least. Lawson first made his intentions about Aaron Judge crystal clear and has now opened up about Josh Donaldson. The Yankees hitting coach has stated that he wouldn’t be surprised if Donaldson had a bounce-back season in 2023. Twitter user Fireside Yankees shared Lawson’s comments.

In the tweet, Fireside Yankees said, “Yankees hitting coach Dillon Lawson expects Josh Donaldson to have a bounce-back season”. Lawson particularly pointed out Donaldson’s motivation and his resume as key reasons that he could help him make a comeback in 2023. Furthermore, he also mentioned Donaldson’s achievements as a hitter over the years.
Fans have reacted to this statement and don’t seem to be too happy with it. Some called for Lawson to be fired. Others expressed their doubt about Donaldson’s abilities. But most reactions were generally negative.
OMG, fire Dillon Lawson.

And if he doesn't Dillon should be fired immediately along with Boone because he said the same thing
— Dennis G Murphy (@Denman8754) February 6, 2023
And Dillon you will be fired at the end of the season if you think Donaldson still has anything left.

How does Dillion Lawson still have a job?
— Tony Giordano (@ranger_lp) February 6, 2023
I totally expected Aaron Boone to say this, but not exactly from the hitting coach lol

This is discouraging because the trash display from last year has killed all my optimism of a bounce back for him. Looked absolutely overmatched and cooked 🫣

The Bringer of whiffs is washed up, don’t see that dude making more contact this year, if anything he’ll strike out even more

Booooooo. He can’t even swing the bat at fastballs down the middle.

These reactions are not that surprising, considering how poorly Donaldson performed in 2022. But there are still positives for Yankees fans to look forward to. The team has brought back Aaron Judge on a 9-year $360 million contract and also improved one of their key problem areas.
The New York Yankees have improved their bullpen
This offseason, the New York Yankees have improved their bullpen. According to New York Post’s Joel Sherman, the Yankees signed “Carlos Rodon on a six-year, $162 million contract”. Furthermore, they have also brought in reliever Tommy Kahnle on a two-year pact.
