A New York Yankees player has set a new defensive record in MLB history. He is none other than the Yankees catcher, Jose Trevino. After a roller-coaster season behind the plate, Trevino recently got duly honored. But the fans have rather got into a debate regarding the issue. 

The Yankees enjoyed an emphatic season this year until an elimination in the league championship. Trevino played a pivotal role in the Yankees’ defense department. Just as it often happens with many MLB players, Trevino rose to stardom after joining the Yankees. But he has thus justified the rise in his star value through his performances. 

According to Statcast readings, Trevino has saved 21 defensive runs this year. Moreover, he had 17 framing runs at a largely impressive 53.9 strike percentage. Thus, he staked his claim to the awards he has got decorated with. However, the fans had different opinions regarding the reports.

Jose Trevino has set a new MLB record, by becoming the first Yankees’ catcher to win the Platinum Glove Award. He is also the first-ever American League player to do so. Trevino has thus beaten the likes of Steven Kwan, Jonah Heim, and Seby Zavala in the race. Though the fans think otherwise and have provided their input on the matter. 

Fox Sports network reported the news on their official Twitter account quoting, “Jose Trevino becomes the first Yankee & first American League catcher to win the Platinum Glove Award.” 

One fan straightaway replied by writing, “Does he deserve it?” 

Another fan wrote, “Not as good as ADLEY! Another SHAM. If you are not going to give it to the actual best player/Defender, then don’t give it out at all.”  

While another fan wrote, “Give this man a contract he truly deserves.”

Jose Trevino’s MLB career to date 

Trevino made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers in 2018. Following on, he joined the Yankees in 2022. Interestingly, 2022 has remained the year of a complete turnaround for Trevino. Alongside the rare feat, he has also won the Golden Glove and Fielding Bible Award in 2022. Additionally, he also made his first All-Star appearance.
