The Boston Red Sox have worn the cape of cautious optimism heading into the season. This follows a quiet offseason. However, their optimism took a nosedive with news they perhaps did not anticipate; Star pitcher Lucas Giolito’s likely season-ending elbow injury. Now, what are they going to do about the gaping hole in their starting rotation?
An obvious name that comes to mind is Jordan Montgomery. In fact, the Red Sox fans have been hoping for Montgomery to come to Boston all along. And now, with Giolito’s injury, it only intensifies the need for his steady presence. It’s time to lay out the options.

While Monty would perhaps start without much transformative influence, he definitely would provide much-needed stability. Counting on that, the team’s promise of remaining competitive stays fulfilled, though at a minimum level. Gumby’s durability is one of his key selling points. Let’s not forget that he has the image of being a consistent innings-eater.

Thanks to him having thrown over 160 innings five times throughout his career. Not to mention his 188.2 innings pitched at age 30 with the Texas Rangers only showcase his ability to go deep. Won’t this be a great fit considering the stark contrast to the Red Sox’s shaky rotation last season?
On one hand, Montgomery seems like a solid option. But a team like the Red Sox is inevitably going to explore other avenues. Think of star free agent Blake Snell. The 2x Cy Young winner is said to be a tempting choice. However, it is his hefty contract demands that might be a deterrent for any team at this point. He’s not the only pitcher on the plate, though.
If the Red Sox considers trading for young aces like Dylan Cease, then acquiring young arms from teams like the Seattle Mariners or the Miami Marlins are also likely paths they can take. But of course, nothing comes free of cost. These options come with a high asking price for Cease and the prospect of parting with valuable budding talent.

Perhaps it’s evident that the Red Sox are in a bind. A starting pitcher is who they need. And they need it fast. While Montgomery seems like the most realistic and cost-effective option, the team’s recent reluctance to make big acquisitions leaves an aftertaste of uncertainty.
