Jordan Montgomery to Texas Rangers Over? GM Chris Young Opens Up as Financial Uncertainty Impacts Star Pursuit

Could a major heartbreak be in store for the Texas Rangers? One of the biggest stories of their World Series triumph was the heroics of Jordan Montgomery. The massive role that the pitcher played in their maiden Fall Classic win made a re-signing an obvious prediction. Why wouldn’t they want to continue such a fruitful relationship, right? As of now, that belief is standing on shaky grounds. 

The budgetary troubles of the Rangers aren’t an unknown story. The uncertainty surrounding their media rights, coupled with a few expensive signings, have made the team less flexible in accommodating a high salary. However, even after all of this, it was expected that they’d go for Monty. But the recent comments of their GM, Chris Young, may have saddened the Lone Star fanbase.

Jordan Montgomery – a star too far for the Lone Stars

Monty’s renaissance has been a sight to behold. The New York Yankees traded the pitcher during the 2022 trade deadline to the St. Louis Cardinals. What was seen as a setback became a foundation stone for Montgomery, who went from strength to strength. This journey culminated in a World Series win with the Rangers. While the world expected a reunion, GM Chris Young recently revealed that he doesn’t expect any further additions to the Rangers’ roster.

Young’s reason was simple – the Rangers’ uncertainty regarding their TV rights. As is known, the Diamond Sports Group filed for bankruptcy in 2023. It created an uncertainty for the Rangers. The team was paid through 2023, and their deal was set to expire after 2024. While Amazon has joined DSG’s new plan, there’s no clarity yet regarding what the state of Rangers be after 2024.

The Rangers’ unexpected lack of significant activity this offseason can be largely attributed to the revenue generation uncertainty of the team. A team that had finally won its first World Series would try to strengthen itself, but it was not to be for the Lone Stars. Now, this limitation has also affected their links with Jordan Montgomery.

With competition for Montgomery already high, there are quite a few directions his free agency can go in.

Is a giant rush incoming?

MLB.com’s Jon Morosi and Marc Feinsand predicted that Montgomery would sign within a week. While they called the Rangers the favorites, Morosi also wondered whether the Boston Red Sox would make a late push or not. The Sox have been linked with Monty since the beginning. Apart from them, there has been a growing murmur regarding the Philadelphia Phillies possibly making their presence known.

Until now, it looked like the Lone Stars’ race to lose, but now that they might be out – suddenly a gold rush might ensue. Could the strategy of stretching the free agency of his Montgomery be working for Scott Boras?
