This off-season has not been predictable for start-free agents. With the Spring Training nearing, amid the cloud of uncertainty, there seems to be one aspect of certainty. This pairing of Jordan Montgomery with his World Series-winning team, the Texas Rangers. But even this spec of certainty comes with various ifs and buts.

Insiders Mark Feinsand and Jon Morosi predict Montgomery’s landing with the Rangers by next Thursday. As a piece of evidence, they cite the pitcher’s familiarity with the organization and the shared need for a deal. On the flip side, when Feinsand throws light on the intriguing possibility of Cody Bellinger rejoining the Chicago Cubs, it could shake things up.

The Windy City’s lack of substitute candidates for Bellinger’s bat makes acquiring him an obvious choice. That’s only possible if one assumes that they don’t pursue Matt Chapman. Feinsand adds, “It feels like the Giants will be in play” indicating that this could perhaps be a three-way battle.

Morosi elaborates on the perspective of the Bellinger-Cubs sentiment. This highlights their positional flexibility and Bellinger’s successful past with the Cubbies before. With that, he also brings to light a possibility that Jorge Soler will land with the San Francisco Giants.

With that, it’s time to explore the dark horses in the Montgomery and Snell sweepstakes. There certainly has been a “buzz” about the Philadelphia Phillies making a bid. Thanks to president Dave Dombrowski’s history of late-offseason surprises. And his words, “I can’t tell you that somebody doesn’t fall into your lap at some point where you say, ‘Gee, that’s an opportunity we can’t turn down.‘”

Despite all these possibilities, the one that’s most likely to play out as per sources, is the one where Monty reunites with the Rangers.
