Jordan Montgomery, one of the exceptional pitchers currently available in the free agency market, led his previous team, the Texas Rangers, to glory. However, things didn’t fall in place, landing Montgomery in the market earlier this off season, and since then, he has been awaiting his appropriate suitor. But seemingly, his wait is about to conclude as one of the most appealing pursuers may get the final nod from the 31-year-old pitcher.

According to the current report, Monty was surprisingly available until the ongoing spring training and had a favorable meeting with one of his admiring team. How much does the meeting convey about his ultimate contract?

According to the MLB insider Peter Gammons, “One NL executive yesterday said, ‘We hear the Red Sox and (agent) Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery.'” Additionally, something similar to this claim was also posed by ESPN’s Buster Olney, reaffirming the probability of the rumored contract.

Monty, on the contrary, posted a 2.79 ERA in 67.2 innings in 11 games, paving the path for the Rangers to claim their World Series title in 2023. But despite his exceptional performance, lack of monetary negotiations created hindrance before him. Consequently, he introduced himself as a free agent in November 2023 with a rumored deal amounting $150 million for six years. Since then, speculation regarding his joining the Red Sox was rotating around. Later on, Monty’s wife’s residence in Boston bolstered the theory; however, no official confirmation was made by the pitcher.

In the contrasting scenario, the Red Sox have been in search of an outstanding starting pitcher for months, and in terms of that, Monty can be counted as their apple of the eye. Sox, who require a high-profile signing, can find all the attributes in Monty, who has already demonstrated excellence during his association with the Yankees. Additionally, given their current payroll of $206 million is much below the tax base threshold, they set a perfect stage for the former Yankees’ pitcher if his asked price revolves around the rumored pact.

However, the final confirmation has yet to be broken as the Scott Boras agent is available till the ongoing spring training while keeping many teams behind him.

If not Sox, then who can get the final nod?

There isn’t only the Red Sox, who seems the befitting team for Montgomery; rather, there are other teams as well, like the Chicago Cubs, the San Francisco Giants, and a few more who are waiting for a favorable nod from the pitcher but have yet to get.

However, another team from the same state as the Yankees, the New York Mets, raised enough speculation after getting their starting pitcher, the Japanese ace Kodai Senga, sidelined at the beginning of spring training. As his shoulder strain will lead him to miss quite a few weeks, it has become a significant concern for the Mets. Though they haven’t confirmed anything about their signing external aces, as for the initial phase, they are putting their faith into their internal options.
