The New York Yankees vs the Boston Red Sox feud has taken a strange turn. The two teams have always been among the fiercest of rivals competing in the AL East division together. At their latest match-up, the Red Sox won the series against the Yankees 3-2. In the second game of the series, the Bronx team suffered an injury that had nothing to do with a player.

John Sterling, longtime play-by-play broadcaster for the Yankees, got hit by a foul ball during game 2. But in true Yankee fashion, he simply said, “I took one for the team!” and continued hosting. Red Sox’s Justin Turner hit the ball from pitcher Clay Holmes, which thankfully only ended up giving Sterling a bloody brow. The next day, the sportscaster received a surprising gift from Turner.

Legends can be found everywhere in the New York Yankees organization. Like a true champ, the 84-year-old broadcaster arrived right back in the booth the next day. In a career spanning more than four decades, this was perhaps the first time not even Sterling could have called the play. Known for calling a consecutive 5060 Yankees games, fans sent messages of love and concern for their beloved radio voice. But they weren’t the only ones.

Color commentator Suzyn Waldman posted a picture of Sterling with a band-aid above his left eyebrow, holding a ball in the broadcaster’s booth. However, what really drew the fan’s attention was the tiny text on the ball. ?To John, no matter where you sit at a ballgame, you?re never safe!?

While John Sterling returned to the booth for his regular duties, so did Turner. While the Red Sox lost the game in which Turner hit the foul ball, he went right back to form on the last day. Boston’s third baseman hit a home run early in the game to help his team lead the chart.
