Home/MLB

The process for the 2024 MLB season has started. Multiple teams have altered their coaching staffs by adding the best personalities to guide them. The New York Mets, a team with all the resources and money, are following the same philosophy and have made the latest move on the same lines.

Given that it was a poor 2023 season for the Mets, after spending the highest money, they needed changes. It all started with the change in the manager with the hiring of Carlos Mendoza. They have added more experience to the coaching squad by signing a veteran for a positive shift in the bid to win the championship.

Handling a bench is one of the big role in the MLB. The Queens understand the intensity of that role, due to which they are on a path to make it happen. According to a post from Will Sammon, The Mets are close to hiring John Gibbons as their bench coach league sources tell me, and @Ken_Rosenthal.Gibbons, the former Blue Jays manager, brings a lot of experience to the dugout next to Carlos Mendoza.”

It is a valuable addition for the Mets, who look to break the ice in the upcoming season and make their investments worthy. Gibbons’ experience and his brilliant work for the Toronto Blue Jays is the reason behind it. Notably, the 61-year-old had two stints in Toronto, from 2004 to 08 and 2013 to 18. It was the second stint that gave him the identity of the leader. During the second, Gibbons led the team to the AL Championship Series in 2015 and 2016, making a positive impact.

Now he will look to do the same as Mendoza’s lieutenant. However, it won’t be the first time John Gibbons will be at the Mets.

A Home Return for the Gibbons in a New Role but Same Responsibility

Notably, the former baseball player started his MLB journey with New York only. John joined the Mets as a first-round pick in 1980 and played 18 big league games. He then moved to coaching with the Queens, adding his knowledge to the farm system. Now, almost two decades later, Gibbons will be joining the organization again, though in a different role but with the same responsibility.

He will assist Mendoza, Jeremy Heffner, the team’s pitching coach, and Eric Chavez, the team’s hitting coach, this time to make the team better and get all the success it has missed in recent years. With all the experience backing him, the move looks suitable for the former Jays’ skipper. But do you think the same? Let us know your take on this appointment in the comments.
