Barry Bonds’ former teammate Jeff Kent slammed the legendary outfielder
In 2001, Barry Bonds was on the cusp of one of his greatest seasons. But his relationship with his Giants teammates was at its worst. Giants star Jeff Kent had harsh words about his legendary teammate, who was playing great baseball. Kent said that Bonds did many questionable things that put the others in difficult positions. However, he also said that he’d learned to live with it.
According to a Sports Illustrated article from the Vaults, Kent said, “Thats Barry. He doesn’t answer questions. He palms everybody off on us, so we have to do his talking for him. But you get used to it. Barry does a lot of questionable things. But you get used to it. Jeff further emphasized the impact of this questionable behavior on both young and veteran players.
“Sometimes it rubs the younger guys the wrong way, and sometimes it rubs the veterans the wrong way. You just hope he shows up for the game and performs. He further elaborated on how much it took for him to get used to this behavior.
“I’ve learned not to worry about it or think about it or analyze it. I was raised to be a team guy, and I am, but Barry’s Barry. It took me two years to learn to live with it, but I learned.”
This was a sentiment that many of his teammates echoed over the years. It would be hard-pressed to find a baseball player that would defend Bonds’ character. Furthermore, he was not just rude, but the home-run king once took down a room of reporters with threats.
