As ardent fans, we often view our favorite players as larger-than-life figures. While we applaud them, we also feel sympathy for them. However, it often remains hidden behind the cheering fans and bright lights that they are also humans, just like us. We often fail to acknowledge the hard times they may be going through, as they rarely show it. That’s where Jarren Duran is different from others.
Jarren Duran always known as a soft-spoken, calm person until the Boston Red Sox outfielder opened up about his long battle with mental health. In a Netflix documentary, he even revealed the sad incident that was kept hidden from everyone. Facing intense criticism from fans and a downturn in performance, Jarren Duran experienced significant challenges. During the 2022 season, he attempted s*****e. Duran recounted, “I got to a point where I was sitting in my room; I had my rifle and I had a bullet and I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened. So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off.” He interpreted this misfire as a sign that he had a purpose and that he was given a second chance at life. Now that they understand the suffering their son was going through, Duran’s parents have come to his aid.
Jarren Duran’s parents recall the harrowing incident, saying that there’s been “nothing harder than knowing your child was in pain.” It was “heartbreaking to hear” for them, knowing about Duran’s struggles and even the s*****e attempts he made earlier. It was never easy for them. However, Duran’s honest confession of the mental trauma—failing to live up to the expectations of many and the criticism he faced—made people think about it beyond baseball. His parents admitted, “Beyond grateful he is still here.”
