The New York Yankees is a name deeply embedded in American culture. It’s so well-known that the word Yank is synonymous with being from the U.S. Even people who don’t know the first thing about baseball know the Yankees. Moreover, their worldwide fame means money – the team is currently valued at $6 billion. Nevertheless, the highest-paying MLB team, the Yankees, still have penny-pinching moves. In a surprise twist, the Bronx Bombers make their players pay for their own Wi-Fi when traveling.

Maybe this is Brian Cashman’s way to make sure his players don’t succumb to the evils of the 21st century. After all, there are better ways to spend one’s time than doom-scrolling through their phone. Read a book maybe, as reliever Lou Trivino does. Or better yet, enjoy the other perks of traveling on a private jet sponsored by the Pinstripes, as ex-Yankee Jameson Taillon did.

The no wi-fi situation on a Yankees plane was recently brought to light by Stephanie Apstein of Sports Illustrated. While talking about different players’ reactions to it, the name Jameson Taillon came up. The pitcher played in pinstripes for two years but signed a 4-year deal with the Cubs in December 2022. He made it clear to Apstein that despite the sad situation, he didn’t make the switch because of the wi-fi problem.

Moreover, he expressed that he didn’t pay for it at all and rather had fun with the other activities the jet offered. “I didn’t pay for it, on principle,” he told the writer, “I will say, also, the Yankees fly on a pretty cool custom plane with poker tables and stuff. So I would take that over free Wi-Fi, if I’m being honest.” Not many players would easily accept the situation, but Taillon wasn’t bothered by this close-fisted move made by the deep-pocketed Yankees.

Non-Yankee players left in disbelief

On hearing the news, many non – Yankees were left in utter disbelief. Jazz Chisholm of the Marlins burst out laughing, while Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs flat-out refused to believe it. But the best answer, perhaps, was given by Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh.

He lamented the fact that not only did the Yankees have no free internet, but they had to shave their faces when playing! Does that mean fans can’t expect him on the Bronx Bombers’ roster anytime soon?
