Trevor Story is back! That’s it. That’s the most trending story for the Red Sox, second to their 3B saga. While most of the team is on a losing spree, the Red Sox are riding against the tide, getting back their injured players. After Masataka Yoshida, it’s shortstop Story back from the injured list. Story has a lot to prove this year, considering how disastrous the last year was for him. So, what does his return mean for the team, and how does he feel about getting his place back?

The 2x All-Star and Silver Slugger winner has had a decorated MLB career since his debut in 2016. He played for the Rockies before getting with the Red Sox in 2022. Overall, in six seasons with the Rockies, Story appeared in 745 games, scoring 158 homers and 450 RBIs. He also took the fewest games to reach 100 homers by any shortstop in MLB history. What followed later was a $140 million deal from the Red Sox for 6 years starting in 2022. He played a total of 163 games since 2022, amassing 21 homers and 90 RBIs.

Story faced a shoulder injury in a game against the Angels. He had to undergo surgery to repair a fractured glenoid and stayed away from the field for 6 months. Before his injury, he had just played 8 games where he scored 4 RBIs. That’s all of his 2024 story. Well, Story made a comeback, swinging his bat in the ongoing spring season. Fit and sound! What did it take for him? “It took a lot for me to get back to where I am right now mentally and physically,” said Story to the MLB Network.

Chance of accommodating Trevor Story in the team

Well, Trevor Story is back, and nothing could be better for the Red Sox than getting their reliable shortstop again. Or is it? With Trevor Story and top prospect Marcelo Mayer in the infield, the Red Sox must make important decisions before the season begins. Mayer is gaining ground in spring training, hitting .294 with five RBI, but Story is anticipated to be the starting one through 2027. For the unversed, Story scored 2 RBIs and 0 Homers in the ongoing spring season. As per the projected lineup, Story is certain to get back his shortstop position, leaving Mayer’s role uncertain.

With potential talent, there is a fine balancing act. The Red Sox manager, Alex Cora, is well aware that prospects don’t always work out at the major league level, so he might not want to place Mayer in the opening day roster. However, Mayer’s chance is getting higher. He’s 5-for-17 (.294) through seven games in his spring training thus far. Additionally, he equals the team’s second-most hits with Alex Bregman and Ceddanne Rafaela in the spring season. Thus, Story will reportedly start the game, but he will have Mayer behind as his probable replacement.
