Some experiences are not meant to be relived. After Monday’s game was postponed due to rain, The New York Yankees outlasted their arch-rivals, The Boston Red Sox, in Tuesday’s doubleheader game. However, there was a time back in 2004 when the former tasted the dust against the latter. To avoid history being repeated, The Bronx Bombers incorporated an unusual approach to motivate the team, which turned out to be a nightmare for them.

The 2004 series between the Red Sox and the Yankees was one of the darkest chapters for the latter. It was the moment lived by Hall of Famers like Derek Jeter and Joe Torre on the field, which both refrain from recalling. That one of the worst episodes was again put into perspective in the form of motivation for the 2022 series between The Houston Astros and Yankees, yielding a terrible outcome.

In its attempt to motivate the team unusually before the fourth game against the Astros in 2022, the Yankees’ mental skills coach circulated the video of the Yankee’s unbelievable defeat by the Red Sox in the 2004 ALCS, even after securing 3-0 at the first stage, in the best-of-seven series. This match is considered to be one of the worst chapters in the careers of Derek Jeter and Joe Torre and also regarded to be the worst loss of the Yankees, which none wishes to remember.

The video was circulated then to all the coaches and team players, as Yankees Manager Aaron Boone, while speaking to the Associated Press, readily accepted it, saying “We watched that video today, oh yeah.” Whereas, Derek Jeter took to this event in an unsatisfactory manner.

While attending his very own Turn 2 Foundation’s charity event, ex-Yankee expressed his opinions on the matter. “I heard about that. I don’t know the context. I still don’t like to talk about [the ’04 ALCS] myself. It makes me sick just thinking about it,” said Jeter stating about the video being sent out.

Veteran MLB manager Joe Torre also expressed his feelings while accompanying Jeter on the Turn 2 Foundations dinner night in Midtown. “You try anything. My guess … is they were trying to show it can be done. Unfortunately, we let [that series] get away from us,” said Joe.

The questionable motivation measure didn’t work in the expected direction, as the Astros clinched a four-game sweep in ALCS 2022, leaving the Yankees disheartened for being out of the offseason.
