Ronald Acuña Jr. has been a star player ever since he joined Major League Baseball in 2018. With a list of accomplishments a mile long, the Venezuelan player is a fan favorite. So when the New York Mets finally faced the Atlanta Braves in a doubleheader on Monday, May 1st, everyone was on their toes with excitement. Another major reason was that the games were finally happening after getting delayed due to rainouts.

Due to one of the few shortcomings at Citi Field, fans had to go home disappointed this last weekend. After an already rain-shortened game on Friday, Saturday and Sunday weren’t lucky either. The two teams finally came face to face on Monday in a back-to-back feature. Acuña gave a stunning performance in the first one, hitting a homer right on the third deck. But the second game went in an unfortunate direction.

Just three pitches into Game 2 of the doubleheader, the Venezuelan player had to exit. He was up against the Mets’ Tylor Megill, who launched a 93.4 mph fastball at him. Instead of going in the direction of his bat, the ball went to his left shoulder. At the last moment, the batter realized what was going to happen but couldn’t move out of the way in time.

After the hit, Acuña sat down on the ground for more than a minute, in obvious pain. The staff attended to him, but he was ultimately led off the field. Fans took to Twitter to express their rage as well as concern.

Some thought it was an intentional move on the pitcher’s part.

Some Braves fans want the team to retaliate in some way.

Some wanted action to be taken against Megill.

Although there was an obvious pain in his shoulder, the Braves gave an encouraging update later on.

The team wanted to do an X-Ray just to confirm nothing was amiss. “It’s just to always make sure,” Brian Snitker, the Atlanta Braves manager, said at the time. Fortunately, the results of tests done at a nearby hospital came back negative; Acuña is officially fracture free and the team will see how things go from here.

Interestingly, some Braves pitchers also hit some Mets batters early on in the game. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Jeff McNeil all got grazed by balls, although they were slower than 90 mph.
