On a mystical Saturday, Ben Rice smashed three home runs for the struggling Yankees. A ship that was already sinking, he held his nerves. Eventually, Aaron Boone’s Yankees won 14-4, crushing the Boston Red Sox. However, a night later, the purple patch of the Bronx disappeared. In a must-win game against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees surrendered. They lost the game 0-3, exposing their pitching and offensive department struggle.

Rafael Devers was the Red Sox’s star baseman who went 3-for-4 with two home runs scored in the 7th and 9th innings, resulting in his team’s victory. All of the Red Sox’s runs came from solo home runs, raising question marks on Yankees fielding. Although the Yankees fans were fumed, their manager Aaron Boone’s frustration was evident, too.

After a catastrophic series loss, Aaron Boone spoke in a postgame press conference. He was asked about his team’s performance and whether the Bronx could have done something different. Bluntly giving his answers, Boone said, “It feels terrible. Yeah, I mean, you got to be a little sick to be in this game, though, and you got to be able to weather it.” For a team that has lost 16 out of their last 25 games, Boone’s frustration could be justified. This could have been the last thing to happen, especially in a squad filled with superstars like Soto and Judge.

Further, aspiring to change the team’s methodology, he said, “So, you know, you’d like your stretch where it’s a bump in the road to, you know, not be this kind of stretch. You know, you’d like to weather it a little bit better, which we need to, obviously. But, you know, it’s all right there in front of us.” Indeed, despite a high start in the 2024 season, the Yankees sank. Since June 7 in their mid-season, they have gone 5-13 and 2-8 in their last 10 games. This is a record Boone clearly dislikes, and he wants his team to perform a little better.

However, Aaron Boone also admitted about their decision to replace Luis Gil with Luke Weaver which they did, only to end up in a disastrous loss. Soon after Luke Weaver pitched, the Red Sox smashed a homer, making them win comfortably. That was a blunder from the management as Luis Gil is the only player for the Bronx that looked unstoppable.

Luis Gil’s encouraging start after a rocky month

Though the Yankees lost a series to the Boston Red Sox, Luis Gil’s return to form was visible. The 26-year-old Bronx pitched to Rafael Devers, which resulted in just one run and a home run. Despite him, other pitchers were taken apart from Devers. Overall, Rafael hit a home run on four hits and nine strikeouts in his 6 ⅔ innings at the Yankees stadium.  Entering the game against the Red Sox, there were questions on Luis’s form. Before the game, he had a 2.03 ERA after 14 outings, but his last three games were decent enough. The Yankees kept riding on Gil’s fire, arm which he responded brilliantly with his fastballs.

However, he made one mistake in his second-to-last pitch on Sunday Night. As Gil aimed at a 98.8 mph fastball, he ran across to Rafael, who smashed him for a home run. “You miss a pitch, and the quality of hitters in this league are going to make you pay,” Gil said after the game.

Aside from Luis for the Bronx, Aaron Boone and co have yet to answer many questions. The team is making blunders that are costing them an entire game. Just a few days ago, Anthony Volpe missed out on a run that made the Yankees lose to their arch-rivals. Perhaps, losing a series to the Red Sox, their next game is within a few days. Will they return to form against the Blue Rays, or will they sink further? Let us know your answers in the comments!
