Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs took a chance in 2023. He took a chance that Chicago would be the right place to continue his career while the Cubs bet on a struggling star. Luckily, it worked out for both parties, and a reunion seems to be on the cards amidst Bellinger’s free agency. But can the Milwaukee Brewers capture the same success with their latest $34 million signing?
More teams are willing to take chances on players recovering from injury or after a bout of bad form. This was the case with Bellinger, who struggled in his last few years with the LA Dodgers. But the Brewers have a different case on their hands with their latest player.

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed Rhys Hoskins to a 2-year, $34 million deal with an opt-out after the first season. This is a comeback deal after the star slugger and first baseman tore his ACL during spring training last year. It is very similar to the deal that Cody Bellinger signed with the Chicago Cubs and played last season. But the question remains whether Hoskins can live up to the hype.
Bellinger had a massive 2023 season and earned himself a chance at redemption. He is now looking for a $200 million contract in free agency. Although Hoskins is not as versatile as the Cubs’ star outfielder, he has more power and has consistently hit more than 20 home runs over his last four seasons.
This is a very good, low-risk deal for both sides, as they look to make the most of the 2024 season. For Hoskins, the deal has a second year with an opt-out for extra security. If he doesn’t perform as well, he can take the second year and have another shot. But it will be interesting to see whether he can have the same success that Cody Bellinger had with the Cubs last season.

Bellinger is set for a massive payday
Following his 2023 season with the Cubs, Cody Bellinger is in line for a mammoth payday. He will likely sign a deal over $150 million and in the range of $200 million. He and his super agent, Scott Boras, are in negotiations with the Cubs on a long-term deal. But there are still valuation gaps, and talks have stalled.
